Dear Ms. Roginsky:
Yesterday, on the “Outnumbered”
program, you said you technically support stricter voter identification laws
but that you are opposed to them as a matter of practicality. Please consider the following.
Your practical opposition casts
you in the same category as racists, homophobes, misogynists, xenophobes, etc.,
etc. You have marginalized an entire
class of people on the assumption they are physically, mentally, emotionally or
financially incapable of making an effort to participate in our democracy. Your implication is they are inept or
incompetent and, therefore, should not be expected to meet certain minimum voter
registration requirements. I believe
many, if not most, of them are insulted by your indirect characterization of
their competency and character.
And, as a matter of
practicality, I wonder what percentage of this category of citizens, and for
the reasons you suggest, have been unable to apply for the public entitlements they
are qualified and eligible to receive?
Sometimes the “greater
good” trumps individual rights, as we often see in cases of “eminent domain”
and other such matters. Your
practicality objection says you value the individual more than you value the
longevity of this great nation. Or
should I say, you place more value on the political advantage of the current
system.
And lastly, my biggest
disappointment is your lack of creativity, imagination and ingenuity. I can imagine countless methods and means of both
private and public agencies providing photographic identification to the
disadvantaged. Your anxiousness to rely
on big government is curious given your family’s history.
Sincerely,
Bill Monroe
