Hit Them Where It Hurts

June 26, 2014

Mr. Thomas J. Donohue
President & Chief Executive Officer
U.S. Chamber of Commerce

Washington, DC  20062-2000

Dear Mr. Donohue:

I am an educated, informed and rational human being.  I am not given to impetuous actions, emotional outbursts or irrational behavior.  I am a Christian man who does his very best to love others as I love myself and to put their needs before my own.

However, there comes a time when following the rules, adhering to protocol, and working within the system simply doesn’t get the job done.  It is then and only then that mature, concerned, and rational people look to unorthodox means to achieve their objectives.

Of all the issues, controversies, and scandals facing our country today, the one that troubles me the most and presents the most imminent threat to our way of life, is the deliberate use of the Internal Revenue Service to achieve or affect certain political outcomes.  Congress clearly understands this violation of the public trust but they have become such an impotent and feckless body we cannot rely on them to remedy this abuse of power.

The American people need to get the attention of our elected officials to let them know we are not going to standby any longer and watch our liberties be confiscated by a government that no longer respects nor serves the people.  The question becomes, “how do we get their attention?”

The answer is simple – suspend their ability to wastefully spend our tax dollars by curtailing our withholding tax payments.  Not forever or even for an extended period of time – just long enough to make sure the message is received.  And once they know we can do it, they’ll know we can do it again.

But you say, that would be against the law.  It seems to me that if our political leadership can selectively choose which laws to ignore and which to enforce, the same privilege should extend to the taxpayer.  If we were to organize a national withholding tax payment strike in which hundreds, if not thousands, of businesses withheld their tax payments, it would overwhelm the IRS’s ability to enforce the law.  And even if they did, the cost of the penalty would be completely justified by the nature of our message.

There are times and issues that demand we do what is necessary to secure our freedoms.  There have been many such examples throughout our national history and it is time for another shining moment of American courage and independence.  Your organization is in the right place at the right time to lead this national strike and to be forever identified with other great and noble acts of courage and patriotism.

Sincerely,

Bill Monroe
